The hidden gem of Bosnia: the White River near Jablanica

Below Prenj, just a few kilometres from Jablanica, hides a canyon of turquoise water that few people know exists. This is the story of the White River and why it deserves a place on your list of adventures in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The White River canyon near Jablanica

Where is the White River?

The White River, also known as the Jablanička Bijela, springs from beneath the mighty Prenj, a mountain often called the "Bosnian Himalayas". Its canyon runs for kilometres near Jablanica, an hour from Mostar and about an hour and a half from Sarajevo. Close enough for a day trip, yet hidden enough to feel like you discovered it yourself.

Why the White River is a hidden gem

The Bijela, meaning "white", is named for its colour: the water is so clear and mineral-rich that it shimmers in turquoise and milky white. The canyon is a series of small waterfalls, deep swimming pools and smooth rock carved by water over thousands of years. Around you are deciduous forests, cold springs and a quiet you rarely hear anywhere else.

The path to the canyon also runs through a piece of history: part of the trail follows a former Austro-Hungarian railway, so your adventure comes with a small lesson about the past of this region.

What you can experience

The best way to get to know the Bijela is from top to bottom, through the canyon itself. With a guide you descend past waterfalls, swim through pools and slide down natural chutes. That is canyoning, and if you are not sure what it means, read our guide What is canyoning. The short version: it is not extreme, gear is included, and both beginners and non-swimmers can join.
